Day three of the nationals brought some more consistent winds. We completed both races very quickly in the morning which was a nice change. I had my best day yet and finished with a 2nd and a 1st. We have a day off tomorrow before the last half of the regatta.

Day two of the nationals brought similar conditions to yesterday just a little bit lighter. I could quite pick it in the first race and finished in 5th but the second was much better and I managed to grab a first. I am in sharing first position with Colin Cheng from Singapore but there is plenty of racing left.

Sorry for any inconvineance but my post for today is on the following link: https://www.facebook.com/MattWearnSailing/posts/438881556212838
Today we had the invitation race in a very strange northerly. We started the race in 15 knots but by the time we got to the top mark there was on 2 knots. The wind kept shifting left throughout the race before it kicked in at 40knots from the south. Unfortunately the races were abandoned so no one won the $400 in any class. First day of racing tomorrow so hopefully we will get a consistent breeze.

Today was the medal race, I didn't sail well at all and only managed an 8th. Fortunately I still managed to finish 3rd overall. After the way my regatta started I am happy that I managed to pull that out of the event. I will have a bit of time off now and will sail a few different classes to learn a few things before heading back to Melbourne for the nationals at the end of the month.

Day one of Sail Melbourne was not the way I had it planned. Started the day with forgetting my sail so was half an hour late to the club and it was one big rush from there. Took a bit to get used to starting with such a small fleet again so the starts weren't ideal and I didn't sail my best in the first race to end up with an 8th. The second race was a little better and finished up with a 4th. Another day tomorrow an another chance to pick up my game.

Day 7 of worlds was another long one. We waited in shore until after lunch where we went out and waited some more for the wind to come in. The wind never stabilised but the race committee were keen to get a race in so they started us anyway with 5 mins till the last signal could be made. I had a terrible race in the very tricky conditions along with a lot of the top sailors. I did enough to keep my top ten position and finished 10th. I have now qualified for the Australian sailing team. Thanks to everyone for all there support through out the week.

Day 6 of worlds was the longest by far. After going out on the water and waiting then coming back on shore for 10 mins we finally got out got the first race under way in 8-12 knots. It was very shifty and finished with a 42. Luckily this is my second drop. I had some better luck in the dropping breeze in the second race and finished with a 4th. I am coming 8th overall with the last day of sailing tomorrow.

Day 5 brought some more light winds. After waiting on shore for a little bit we got out and started our first race in 5-10 knots. I had a solid race and finished in 13th. This was the only race for today because a storm came in so we had to go in. Things a tightening up and with only two days left the racing will be intense. I am still in 9th overall but have a lot of work to keep the great result.

Day 4 and the last day of qualifying brought 5-10 knots of wind and very shifty. In the first race I sailed well and finished 4th but the 2nd race was completely different. I got a yellow flag at the bottom mark and had to watch the whole fleet sail past while I was doing my turns. Luckily this is my drop and I am now in 9th overall going in to finals tomorrow. Lots of tight racing ahead and looking forward to every second of it.

Day three of worlds was almost identical to the last two days with 15 knots of breeze. Today we had three races so we could catch up on the one we missed yesterday. I had a solid day and posted a 6 a 7 and a 4. This has moved me to 10th overall. One more day of qualifying before finals start on Thursday. Still a lot of racing left.
Monday, 18 November 2013
Day two of worlds started with no wind and the whole fleet were waiting on shore until the afternoon where we finally got out on the water. The yellow fleet at 4 general recalls before they got away so by the time we started it was mid afternoon. We got one race in where I managed to finish in 7th. Still have some work to do with my starts but all on track at the moment. 3 races tomorrow where anything can happen.

The first day of the laser world championships turned out to be a tough one for me. We saw the wind get up to 18 knots today which is something that no one expected. I finished the day of with a 18th and a 14th. Solid results seeing as once again my starts let me down. I know what I have to fix and should be on top of that problem for tomorrow. Still a lot of sailing ahead and looking forward to every second of it.

Today is going to be my last training session on the water before the first race of the worlds that start on Sunday. It has been a great week of training and it has also been great to see how my progress has gone since the last worlds. I will have the day off tomorrow to do to fully rest up before the week ahead.

The first day of finals brought 20-25 knots. Both races today were about an hour long and they definitely took a toll on everyone's bodies. In the first race I got some seaweed around my centre and had to sail the race with it so ended up with a 24th. I got to show my speed in the second race and finished the day with a 5th to move me up to 12th overall. Looking forward to some lighter winds tomorrow.

So I have been in Rio for a few days now and it has definitely been an experience. We all came expecting light winds but on the first day out on the water we had 25 knots which was a surprise. Today we had more expected conditions and was great to start getting a grasp on what might be in store for us in three years at the Olympics. I am looking forward to learning more over the next week.

Today was the last day of the finals series and it was my last chance to keep my top 6 position to make it in to the medal race tomorrow. We had a range from 5-35 knots today with some big shifts on the course. I finished the day with a 6th an 8th and a 2nd to put myself in 3rd position going in to the medal race tomorrow. The way the system works now is that the placing you are in is what points you carry in to the race. Meaning that it is possible for anyone to win.

Yesterday we didn't get out on the water until 4 and started the first race of the day at 5. It was to windy to leave shore so we had to wait for it to drop. Both races were run in 20-25 knots in some shifty conditions. In the first race I came from behind to take my first win of the regatta. The second race I got unlucky with the shifts and finished 9th. Today we had anything from 5-25 knots with up to 90 degree shifts. One of the coldest days I have ever experienced. Finished the day with a 5, 22, 15. Still coming 5th overall with one more day of racing left before the medal race.

Another great training session today. We had a different wind which looks similar to what we will have for the regatta. The shifty and moderate breeze is suiting my style well and I am feeling very confident. The boat is all registered and measured. I will have a day off tomorrow to get fully prepared before racing starts on the 21st.
Saturday, 18 May 2013
My first day of training in Medemblik Holland brought some cold shifty 10-15 knot breeze. I had a great session and my confidence is feeling great with only 3 days of training left until the regatta starts. 2 more days of on water training and then a day of to get ready for the first race on the next day.

The first day of the ISAF sailing world cup in Hyeres brought 2-6 knots of very shifty wind. This made it seriously hard to be consistent and it was a day that I would like to forget. Tomorrow is another day and is the last day of the qualifying series. One more final push to get a good spot going in to finals.

Finished the Mussanah race week today. Didn't finish the way i would have like with a 10 and a 16. Learnt lots about the place and about my skills in the light wind which was the major goal from the start. Looking forward to working on all these areas before the worlds in November. Next stop is Palma Spain for the world cup.

Final day of the Warren Jones match racing regatta today. We started the semi finals well with to race wins but was cut short due to no wind. Went went in to finals against Dave Gilmour. Dave was just to good for us today and we made some little mistakes which cost us the regatta. Happy to have finished 2nd.

Competed in the Pot Of Gold regatta at Hillarys yacht club. I finished off with 4 out of 4 race wins. I start competing in the Warren Jones match racing regatta tomorrow. That finishes up with the finals on Friday hopefully we get there. Team is sailing well together and should be ready to take it on.

Finished the Little Wheel match racing regatta in second yesterday. We didn't lose a match on the second day to get in to the final. The final was changed to one race rather than best out of five. We got a penalty on the start and the small course made it almost impossible to come back from it. Looking forward to competing in the Warren Jones regatta in a couple of weeks.

Spent yesterday afternoon on the Melges 24 competing in the Rumble In The Reach regatta. The conditions were very tough and the course was very small so it made it difficult to catch up on the handicap that we were given. Made a few mistakes which hurt us on such a small course. We still had some very short but fast rides.

Hi everyone. Sorry about the lack of updates of the last year. This new and revitalised page will be updated regularly and everyone can follow my progress.
Pretty much over the last year I have been getting used to the European campaign life.
The latest update would be that I have just come second in Sail Melbourne, sixth at Sail Sydney and fourth at the nationals in Hobart. I was first under 21 in all of these regattas.
I am on a break at the moment and just having some fun with the Musto Skiffs and training with Tristan Brown for the Warren Jones match racing regatta.
Will keep in touch.
